grant kester holds a bfa in photography from maryland institute, college of art, an ma in art history from university of rochester and a ph.d. in visual and cultural studies from the same school. in addition to being a professor of art history, he also is a founding editor of field: a journal of socially engaged art criticism.
professor kester is one of the leading figures in the critical dialogue around socially engaged art practice. his publications include art, activism and oppositionality: essays from afterimage (1998), conversation pieces: community and communication in modern art (2004),the one and the many: contemporary collaborative art in a global context (2011). his essays have been published in art in theory: the west in the world -- an anthology of changing ideas (wiley/blackwell, 2020), a companion to public art (2016), etc.
